The Artists Behind Hospital of Emotions: How 70 Creators Transformed a Hospital

Every room at Hospital of Emotions started the same way: an empty former hospital space and one instruction — build a world around a single human emotion. What came back from 70 different artists is nowhere close to uniform.
Some rooms lean maximalist, floor-to-ceiling installations that swallow you the moment you step in. Others are quiet and spare, using a single object or sound to carry the weight of a feeling like grief or gratitude. That range is the point. Joy doesn't look the same to every artist, and neither does fear.
Working with the building, not against it
Because the venue is a real, retired hospital, the artists weren't handed a blank white cube. They were handed a former operating room, a nurses' station, a patient room with the outlines of old equipment still visible. Many chose to work with those traces rather than erase them — folding hospital signage, gurneys, and architectural details into the artwork itself, so the room's clinical history becomes part of the emotional story it's telling.
Disciplines across the board
The artist roster pulls from visual art, architecture, illustration, street art, and set design — which is part of why no two rooms feel alike, even within the same department. A "Fear" room built by a set designer might play with scale and darkness, while an illustrator's take on the same emotion might feel more intimate and narrative.
A living, evolving exhibition
With 10,000+ visitors in its opening weekend alone and several weekends already selling out, Hospital of Emotions has become one of LA's most talked-about art events of the year — proof that pairing serious artistic ambition with an unconventional venue resonates far beyond the traditional gallery crowd.
Each room includes the artist's own text, so as you move through the building you're not just seeing the work, you're hearing the intention behind it.
