What Is Hospital of Emotions? Inside LA's Immersive Art Experience

Some exhibitions hang art on walls. Hospital of Emotions turns the building itself into the artwork. Housed in a former wing of St. Vincent Medical Center, this immersive experience invites visitors to wander through 80 transformed hospital rooms across four floors, each one reimagined by a different artist.

There's no map, no guided tour, and no fixed path. That's intentional. You move from what was once an ER bay into a former patient room, then into an old operating theater, never quite sure what emotion waits behind the next door. The building's past — a place built for vulnerability and care — becomes the canvas for a present-day meditation on what it means to feel.

Eight Departments of Emotion

The 80 rooms are grouped into eight thematic "departments": Joy, Love, Fear, Anger, Hope, Sadness, Gratitude, and Resilience. Seventy artists and art directors, spanning installation, illustration, architecture, and set design, each claimed a room and built a world inside it. Every space includes a short text from the artist, so you're never wandering blind — just unguided.

Why a hospital?

The choice of venue is the whole concept. A hospital is where people confront fear and also rediscover what matters most. By staging the exhibition inside a real medical building, the curators (House of Art and Dreams, working with ROYVA Group and the St. Vincent Behavioral Health Campus) shift the focus from treating the body to processing emotion — turning a space built for clinical care into one built for connection.
